Transformation National Monument Oceaanhuis in Rotterdam
WEST507 - Het Oceaanhuis - The Ocean House
Commissioned by Waterford Investments & Vervat Vastgoed, the national monument at Westzeedijk in Rotterdam has been transformed into 184 two-room apartments and studios. These are historic loft apartments with 22 newly constructed apartments on top of the existing section. The Stokvis Building, originally built by the firm Stokvis & Zn., is now used as an office building for various companies, including the City of Rotterdam, the Police Department and the University of Applied Sciences. It also offers car passages, an atrium and a roof terrace. It is also known as ‘The Ocean House’.
Type of climate control
The application of the ClimaRad Smart Solution and Comfort Solution was chosen because the façade is exposed to high noise levels and the ClimaRad ventilation units are ideally suited to cope with that. In addition, gains were made in the habitable floor area, since the units are placed on the façade, eliminating the need to reserve space for ducts and shafts.
The listed components will be preserved in this transformation. ClimaRad's hand-shaped brick format wall grilles are ‘concealed’ on the outside in the facing bricks. This way the use of a modern ventilation system in the interior is not visible outside.
The ClimaRad Sensa V2X and Sensa Horizontal ventilation units were combined with extraction from ClimaRad Fans or the ClimaRad MiniBox. The heat recovery unit in the living room and the extractor are wirelessly paired, ensuring optimal coordination of the inlet and outlet of air. Using various sensors (CO2, humidity and temperature), the indoor air quality in the homes is measured and the required ventilation is automatically adjusted accordingly. In some homes where an indoor home office was constructed, the ClimaRad S-Fan was used for mechanical supply of air.
